About Street Dance Styles
Street dance

Street dance is an over-arching term used to describe dance styles that evolved in everyday places such as streets, school playgrounds, and clubs. It is improvisational in nature, and encourages social interaction. Street dance "styles" started in the African - American US cultures in the 1970's and are still developing today with dances such as breakdance, popping, locking, hip hop new style and house dances. These have become popular not only as an artform and in competitions, but also in exercise routines and physical education.

Fitness hula

Despite its Hawaiin image, the invention of the Hula-Hoop can actually be traced back to the 1300's in England. It is still a popular toy and using the Hula is a method of fun exercise using spins, jumps, rolls and balance exercises to provide a varied workout. Fitness Hula is especially helpful for developing the abdominal area.

Combat

“Combat Dance” is a unique and eclectic blend of techniques and principles gleaned from combat styles, martial arts (such as capoiera, aikido and kung fu), modern dance, and expressive movements used to deal with conflict. It provides a means to greater awareness and disciplined control of the body whilst allowing new and creative avenues of expression.

Fitness Cheerleading

Fitness Cheerleading is based on the North American sport of Cheerleading where a group (usually female) performs synchonized movement routines combining elements of dance, tumbling and stunting to cheer on teams at games or matches. Fitness cheerleading provides cardiovascular exercise for all ages and fitness levels, using basic hand signals and footwork routines, put together to provide a whole-body workout. Pompoms are optional!

Salsa

The Salsa dance style is done to Salsa Music. It has roots in African inspired Cuba, Latin America and North America. Salsa is usually danced in a pair, with changes of partner, but also includes solo work. Salsa is danced to a specific measured rhythm The basic step typically uses three steps each measure. Salsa is generally danced in a particular spot on the dance floor, rather than travelling across it, with partners moving around each other or exchanging places.

Bollywood

A parody of the word "Hollywood", Bollywood refers to a style of film originating in India, and the cultural styles of music and dance associated with them. The dance style has been derived from classical indian dance styles and folk dances and has an interesting variety of movements which provide cardiovascular exercise.

Strength training

Strength training using weight and resistance training, repetition and fixed sets of movements of the joints and limbs to create exercises that aim to progressively develop muscle strength.
